The purpose of the Social Justice Commission is to assist the parish in the promotion and implementation of Catholic social teaching. The Commission assists the pastor “to foster works through which the spirit of the gospel is promoted, even that which pertains to social justice” (CIC, c. 528 §1).
Our Mission is as follows:

Assist the parish in working for change and social justice for underserved and disadvantaged populations in our community, our nation and our world.

Assist the parish to be a witness of charity and justice.

Ensure education of the parish regarding Catholic social teaching.

Engage in strategic planning, policy development and recommend the areas of Catholic social teaching in response to parish priorities and goals.

Serve as a liaison to affiliated archdiocesan initiates.

2010 Activities and Opportunities for
Social Justice Ministry Work:

Avondale Park Transitional Housing and Homeless Shelter meals – Every month on the 3rd Wednesday volunteers from the parish take a community dinner to the residents and help serve in the Community Building. We serve between 25 and 50 residents each month.

Catholic Relief Services Fair Trade Coffee Program
-
Food Bank – we collect non-perishable food items each week to distribute to local food banks. We are seeking a Food Bank Coordinator for the parish who will keep the food bank donations in the bulletin and announcements, hold special food drives and coordinate the deliveries.

Kibera Orphan Education Project – Our parishioners are supporting Kenyan students in High School and College classes
