Woodinville
Catholics Break Ground on New Church
April 7,
2011 ~ Woodinville, WA:
Today, Fr. Frank Schuster, pastor of
Woodinville’s Blessed Teresa of Calcutta
Catholic Church, announced the groundbreaking
ceremony for the new church at 17828 NE
Woodinville-Duvall Road. The event is scheduled
for Sunday, April 10th, 2011
commencing with Mass at 11:00am at the church’s
current location (shared space with Check Ride,
13632 NE 177th Place, Woodinville)
followed by the official groundbreaking
ceremony and reception at 1:00pm at the NE
Woodinville-Duvall Road property.
Western Washington’s
Archbishop J. Peter Sartain and Fr. Frank
Schuster will concelebrate the 11:00am Mass,
then, together, they will lead parishioners and
guests in the blessing of the earth and
groundbreaking ceremony at the new property.
The public is invited to the groundbreaking and
to an outdoor reception afterwards.
The new church
property was formerly the Woodinville Riding
Club. The Archdiocese of Seattle purchased this
real estate in 2001 in anticipation of future
growth of the Catholic community in and around
Woodinville. This is the first parish in the
United States to be named after Mother Teresa.
According to
Seattle-based Broderick Architects, the
church’s architectural firm, the building
project includes a single-story, 16,000 square
foot church facility that will seat
approximately 600 people for each of the
several weekend Mass celebrations. Goudy
Construction of Bellevue will develop the land
and build the church.
In its early days in
Woodinville, Blessed Teresa Parish celebrated
its services in various locations including
Leota Jr. High School, Wooden Cross Lutheran
Church, Northshore Universalist Unitarian
Church and Bear Creek United Methodist Church.
“We are grateful for hospitality of several
local faith communities in our area and the
Northshore School District. Such hospitality
helped our parish begin in our early days in
Woodinville,” says Fr. Schuster. Three years
ago, the parish created a temporary worship
space by renovating a warehouse located at
Check Ride driving school in Woodinville. Fr.
Schuster says, “The building of our new church
comes at a good time. We are quickly outgrowing
our present facility.”
According to Fr.
Schuster, Blessed Teresa Parish is continuing
the Catholic tradition of evangelization by
building a new church where we will give praise
and glory to God. “Recent new parishioners who
have joined our parish tell us what makes our
parish special. We are a welcoming Christ
centered community with numerous opportunities
to get involved,” he says. “We offer a breadth
of ministries and outreach services including
faith formation for young children, teens, and
adults, a welcoming program for returning
Catholics and a vibrant social justice
ministry.”
Fr. Schuster adds,
“Our new church will be a beautiful spiritual
home for the people of Woodinville. We invite
local residents to visit our parish and find
out what Catholicism is about.”
The first Mass in
the new church will be in the spring of 2012.
